Running for AYME
Alastair Scott from Edinburgh is taking on the Great North Run for the third time.
He’s doing the Newcastle half marathon on the 19th September to raise funds for AYME (pron. Aim) - the Association of Young People with ME
The charity - which provides help, information and support to children and young people with ME - is particularly important to Alastair since his daughter Kirsty was diagnosed with the condition five years ago.
He’s raised more than £2000 for AYME so far and hopes to add to this.

DAPL
The Drug and Alcohol Project Limited is a community organisation based in Fife. It provides information, advice and support to anyone of any age who is affected by their own or someone else’s drug or alcohol use.
DAPL has been running since 1994 with experienced workers on hand to provide the free service in confidence.
There are two bases – one in Leven and one in Kirkcaldy. If you’re interested in finding out more, you can give them a phone, pop in or head along to their AGM being held at Buckhaven Theatre in Leven from 6.30pm on Thursday 16th September.

Health in Mind needs Volunteers
Edinburgh based charity “Health in Mind” works in the local area to promote the well being of people who experience mental health difficulties.
The charity is currently recruiting volunteers for their brand new service – Communities Connecting. The aim is to help older people find out what’s going on in their local community and build confidence to get out and about again.
Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome but the charity would especially like to hear from older people.

Centre Stage Performing Arts
A new Youth Theatre for kids in the Penicuik and Midlothian area has just started up.
Centre Stage Performing Arts is a non-profit making group working in conjunction with Beeslack Community High School’s Education Programme. If you have an enthusiasm for singing or dance and you’re aged between 12 and 18, then the group would like to hear from you.
Sessions are held on Wednesday evenings from 7pm – 9pm in the Beeslack drama studio. It costs £4 per night – or you can choose to pay for it per term.
The first show the youth theatre is putting on is “Rent – The Musical” and auditions for this are being held on the 26th September.

Charity Sports Dinner
A charity sports dinner is being held at the Craws Nest Hotel in Anstruther on Sunday the 3rd of October.
Speakers on the night include former footballer Duncan McKenzie, who played for Everton and Leeds in his time, along with Willie Allan and Adger Brown. An auction and raffle will also be held.
If you’d like to head along, it starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £35. Money raised from event goes toward the East Neuk Wheelchair Appeal which donates powered or manual wheelchairs to those in need of one.

Lynne’s September Challenge
Lynne McNicoll from Edinburgh has set herself a September Challenge……to raise £150,000 in 30 days.
The money she raises will be used to help local young people and their families affected by cancer.
Lynne has planned a variety of fundraising events to run during the month. On Saturday 11th September, a Zipslide has been arranged to take place in Inverleith Park in Edinburgh. It costs £10 to register and you need to raise £50 in sponsorship – more if you can.

Oops a Daisy
The North Queensferry Baby and Toddler Group is holding its next fundraising event on Thursday 9th September.
“Oops a Daisy” is a theatre event with live music and dance which is entertaining for both children and grown-ups.
There’s also an opportunity for the children to plant their own daisy seed to take home with them, along with face painting, colouring and games.
It’s being held at the Community Centre in Brock Street in North Queensferry and doors open at 9.30am for a 10 o’clock start. Tickets are £4.

NYSP Fundraiser for MacMillans
The New York Steam Packet restaurant in Edinburgh is having a night of fundraising for Maggie’s Centre.
Tickets for the event on Wednesday the 15th September cost £20. The evening begins at 7pm with a welcome drink, followed by a three course dinner and karaoke entertainment.
Money raised from the event will go to Maggies Centre in Edinburgh, which helps to provide support for people affected by cancer.

Free Blood Pressure Checks in Craigmillar
The Thistle Foundation is a Scottish charity which provides a variety of services for people living with disabilities or health conditions.
As part of this year’s “Know your Numbers Week”, its teamed up with another charity, the Blood Pressure Association, to offer local residents in Edinburgh’s Craigmillar area free blood pressure checks.
They’ll be at the Thistle Gym on Niddrie Mains Road from 10am until 4pm on the 16th September. Just drop in….

Barns Ness Lighthouse Abseil
MacMillan Cancer Support is challenging a hundred people to scale the dizzy heights of Barns Ness Lighthouse in Dunbar for an abseil.
Whether you’re experienced at abseiling or just a beginner you can give it a go - safety instructors will be on hand at all times with expert guidance and safety equipment. However, you do need to be over the age of 16 and those under 18 years of age require parental consent.
It’s on Saturday the 2nd October taking place between 10am and 4pm. There’s a registration fee of £20 and you need to raise £100 in sponsorship.
Money raised will help local people living with cancer and their families.

Grandparents and Toddler’s Groups
If you’re caring for or helping to look after your grandchildren, you may be interested in coming along to a Grandparents and Toddler’s Group.
A couple of new groups have been set up in Midlothian.
Dalkeith Community Centre in Woodburn runs a group on Monday mornings. The other, Stepping Forward in Queensway, Penicuik, is having a coffee morning on September the 8th with a view to running a regular group on Thursday mornings from the 30th September.

Battle of the Bands
A Battle of the Bands competition is helping raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
A number of local bands are performing at The City Nightclub in Edinburgh on Thursday the 2nd September.
The bands are on stage at 7pm but doors will be open from 6 and tickets are £6.
Money raised on the night will help fund the charity’s research into heart disease as well as help it provide care and support for people living with it.

Liberton Hospital Fundraiser
Staff at Liberton Hospital have organised a fundraising fete in order to buy new televisions for their elderly care wards.
Each ward is running its own stall and the organisers have planned a fun day complete with bouncy castle, pony rides and music from the Glencourse Pipe Band.
It’s being held on Saturday the 4th September at the hospital and if you want to head along and support them, it’s on from 1pm until 5pm.
All donations raised will be used to enhance patient comforts in the hospital.
Walking to Beat Blood Cancers
An Edinburgh Mum’s taking on a sponsored walk to help raise funds for the charity, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research after her daughter was successfully treated for the disease.
Joan Macrae from Colinton is taking part in the Edinburgh Forget me Not Walk and is hoping people in the local community will join her.
She’s raising money to help fund projects to find better treatments and cures for children, teenagers and adults.

Organic Fortnight
The Soil Association Scotland is a registered charity which helps to promote plant friendly food and farming through education, campaigns and community programmes.
The charity is behind Organic Fortnight which kicks off today and runs through until the 17th September.
It includes the Portobello Organic Produce Market on the 4th September, the Small World Shop which is being re-launched in Prestonpans on the 11th September, while various food events are being held in and around Linlithgow.

Rock the Rovers
Rock the Rovers is a fundraising music gig held every year to raise money for a variety of charities as well as Raith Rovers FC.
This year, it’s being held at Kitty’s and DV8 in Kirkcaldy on Sunday the 29th August. Throughout the day, around 20 local bands will be performing, the first band taking to the stage at 1pm.
Money from the gig will go to five charities ; the Aberlour Childcare Trust, the Scottish Breast Cancer Campaign, the Scottish Society for Autism, Leukaemia Research and the Children of Ineu Romanian Appeal, as well as Raith.
If you’d like to head along, tickets cost £10 for a day pass. You can buy them from various outlets ; Styx in Kirkcaldy, Styx in Glenrothes and the Fife Free Press office in Kirkcaldy. Tickets can also be bought at the door on the day.

Little Treasures Toddler Group
Little Treasures is a new toddler group set up by the Salvation Army in Kirkcaldy.
It’s being held in the Salvation Army Hall at 125 High Street and is for children aged up to 5 years.
It’s officially being launched on Thursday the 2nd September – Councillor Judy Hamilton will be opening the group. Just head along for 1pm when there will be fun activities for both children and carers.

The Stroke Association is having a fundraising Pirate Plummet at the Falkirk Wheel next month.
If you’re up for it, you won’t have to walk the plank but you will be abseiling down from the Falkirk Wheel – in pirate fancy dress if you like.
Registering for the event costs £10 and you need to raise £75 in sponsorship – more if you can.
Funds raised go to the charity which funds research into the prevention and treatment of strokes as well as supporting stroke patients and their families.
Community Weight Loss Challenge
A community weight loss challenge is launching tomorrow.
This non-profit making venture is set up to support people who would like to lose some weight and at the same time provide them with nutritional information. There are also prizes – for the person who loses the most weight, raffles and the opportunity to develop new friendships.
It starts at 6pm at the South Bridge Resource Centre in Edinburgh and runs for 12 weeks.

Multiple Sclerosis Centre – Open Day
The Multiple Sclerosis Centre in Lothian provides a range of therapies as well as support for people with the condition.
As well as things like physiotherapy, reflexology and yoga, information is also provided for people attending the centre. Social contact with others who have multiple sclerosis can also be beneficial.
The Centre is having an open day on Saturday 21st August from 10.30am until 12.30pm. It costs £2 and there will be various stalls as well as refreshments on offer. It’s at 40C Swanfield, Bonnington Road in Edinburgh.

Charitable Massage
Staff at Active X clinics in Edinburgh are hoping to raise money for two separate charities this week.
They’re providing half hour massages to raise money the Haemophilia Society and the Combat Stress charity, which supports ex-service men and women.
They’re being held on the 19th and 23rd of August and it costs £14 for a massage. All the proceeds will be split between the two charities.

Preston Athletic Football Club is currently looking for new players to join their 14s Boys Team.

Sponsored Walk for the Homeless
A sponsored walk is being held to raise money for homelessness in Edinburgh.
The 9 mile route starts from Cockenzie, follows the John Muir Way and finishes at Gullane Bents. There’s also a family route, led by a countryside ranger, which is only 3 miles long. It starts and finishes in Gullane.
It’s a great family day out with prizes for the kids.
It’s taking place on Saturday the 11th September and starts around 10am. Money raised will go to the Bethany Christian Trust.

Glenrothes Art Show
An art show is being held in Glenrothes to raise funds for charity.
It’s at the Lomond Centre in Woodside Way. On display will be paintings on various themes as well as a selection of special works dedicated to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
The Regimental Association – which provides help and financial assistance to those who formerly served in the Regiment – will benefit from the money raised from the sale of the artwork. Other charities benefiting are The ABF – The Soldier’s Centre, Kingdom Kids and The ABF Soldiers Charity.
The exhibition runs until the 30th August.
The Newburgh Coble Boat Race
The Newburgh Coble Boat Race has been an important local event for the community of Newburgh since the first recorded race in 1880.
This year, to mark “Celebrating Fife 2010”, the organisers have planned a programme of events to run alongside it.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate the heritage of the Royal Burgh at the town’s waterfront from 2pm on Saturday the 14th of August. Attractions on the day include boat trips, a flying display, traditional music and various stalls.
The boat race heats start around 5pm.
The event organisers are also pleased to announce that the Reaper FR958, a sailing herring drifter, will make its first voyage up the River Tay to take part in the Heritage Day celebrations.

Fun Day in aid of Springer Rescue
Springer Rescue, Scotland is a charity run by local volunteers to rescue and re-home springer spaniels. It also provides education on responsible dog ownership.
The charity is holding its very first fun day at Vogrie Country Park at Gorebridge on the 15th of August. It’s running from 12 noon until 4pm and all funds raised on the day will go to their Vet Fund Appeal.
The organisers also need help obtaining a microphone system to make announcements on the day.

Battle of the Bands
A Battle of the Bands competition is raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

Summer Music
The Linton Lane Centre in Kirkcaldy is hosting a summer music event to raise funds.
The centre, which is run by volunteers, offers opportunities for everyone in the community to take part in activities for enjoyment and education. Money raised will enable it to provide things like playgroups, youth clubs and training courses.
The music event (running as part of “Celebrating Fife 2010”) is taking place on Saturday the 14th August from 6.30pm and costs £10 a ticket – which includes a buffet. Bruce and Jamie Watson, Rab Noakes and Dennis Alexander are all on the bill. Bring your own drinks.

Run 10k in aid of Cancer Research
Cancer Research UK is organising Run10K events across the country to raise funds.
One of the runs is taking place at Hopetoun House, just outside Edinburgh. It’s on the 17th of October and is open to men and women over 16 years of age. 16-18 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.
It costs £19.50 to enter and money raised in sponsorship will help the charity to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

Take a Skydive for Charity
The Meningitis Research Foundation is taking fundraising sky high….
The charity is looking for people to join them in a series of 10,000ft skydives across Scotland. They’re available to do 7 days a week throughout the year – so let them know which date suits you.
By raising a minimum sponsorship to take part in one of the events, you can help the charity continue its research into the detection, prevention and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia.

The BHF Running Events
The British Heart Foundation is encouraging you to beat the winter blues by taking part in their 5 or 10K runs being held in Edinburgh on the 31st October.
You can run, jog or walk the route which takes place in Holyrood Park and Arthur’s seat.
Families are welcome along - it costs £10 for adults, £5 for children and under 5’s go free. Prizes are also available for the highest fundraiser and best fancy dress.

Football for Under 14s
Musselburgh Windsor Football Club is currently looking for new players to join their Under 14s Boys Team.
They’re hoping to recruit players for all positions, so if you were born in 1997 or 98, you’re welcome to come along to the open training session on Wednesday the 28th July.

Tea Party for Maggies
A tea party is being held on Thursday the 29th July to raise some cash for Maggie’s Centre in Edinburgh.
It’s on at the Rutland Hotel from 6pm until 8pm and as well as the refreshments, there’s also entertainment provided by musician Andy Lucas.
If you’d like to head along, tickets for the event cost £5. All proceeds from the ticket sales go to the Centre, helping provide support for people affected by cancer.

Play Day
A special play day has been planned for children in Edinburgh.
The family friendly event is part of the national play day programme. It’s being held in the Grassmarket and includes four different play areas for children up to the age of 8 to come along and have fun being active and creative. Parents and adults and encouraged to play too!
This year’s theme is “Our Place” and aims to put children at the heart of our communities, asking everyone to help create better places for all of us to live and play.
The Play Day is free and runs from 12.30 to 4.30pm on Wednesday the 4th of August.

Junior Storyteller Competition in East Lothian
Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council is holding a Junior Storyteller competition.
It’s being run as part of the council’s community arts festival “On the Fringes” and it’s inviting children aged between 5 and 9 years and between 10 and 14 years to come along and tell or perform their stories. The stories can be their own or a well-known story. Prizes are available for each group and the Musselburgh Arts Festival Trophy will be presented for best effort and originality.
It’s being held in Musselburgh Library at 1.30pm on the 14th of August but entries need to be in by the 8th. The entry fee is a £1.

Bugle Magazine
The Bugle magazine is put together by budding writers who have been or are currently homeless.
Behind the magazine is the Bethany Christian Trust – an Edinburgh based charity set up to meet the needs of homeless and vulnerable people.
The team are looking for contributors to the magazine. Anyone can apply but they would especially like to hear from people who are or have been homeless. No previous writing experience is required as guidance will be given.

Longstone Ladies
A women’s football team from Edinburgh is looking for new recruits.
Training is already underway for the Longstone Ladies but they’re still in need of a few more players.
They’re playing against Longstone United in a special men v women charity football match on Sunday 1st August at Saughton 3G pitch in Edinburgh. The game kicks off at 11.30am and costs £2 to go along and watch. Proceeds from the game are going to Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids.

Big Fun Run
To raise funds, The Meningitis Research Foundation has organised a Big Fun Run to take place in Edinburgh and it’s hoping you can join them.
The charity funds research into the prevention of meningitis and septicaemia as well as providing support for people affected. This event helps them raise more funds for their work.
The 5K run is taking place in Holyrood Park on Sunday the 25th July and it’s open to all ages although children under 13 must walk the course and be accompanied by a paying adult.
All Big Fun Runners receive a fun run medal and goody bag.

The Big Match
Local celebrities and ex-professional football players are lining up to take part in an Edinburgh charity football game.
The big match, between Hutchison Vale FC and Dukla Pumpherston, kicks off at 2pm on Sunday the 8th of August at the Saughton Enclosure. Just some of the names who’ll be along on the day are Steven Presley, Scottish former football players, Brian Martin and Gus McPherson and Scottish actor Tony Roper.
As well as the footie, there’s also lots of entertainment on the day.
If you’d like to support them it’s entry by donation - money raised goes towards the Craig Gowans Memorial Fund – from which many charities can benefit.

Community Health Project Fundraiser
The community Foundation for Planetary Healing is an Edinburgh based organisation run by volunteers to promote health and well-being through holistic therapies.
To raise funds, the registered charity is having a coffee morning on Friday the 6th August between 10am and 2pm. If you’d like to join them, head along to the centre in Portobello High Street.
Money raised will be used to support the holistic community health project.
There’s also an opportunity to try out various therapies at the Therapy Taster Day on Friday 13th August between 10am and 3pm again at the centre. It costs £5 for a 20 minute session

Teddy Bear Parachute Jump
A sponsored Teddy Bear parachute jump has been organised to raise funds for Seagull Trust Cruises - a charity which provides free canal cruising for people with special needs across Scotland.
It’s part of a fun packed day which everyone is welcome along to at the Falkirk Wheel on Sunday the 26th September. Other activities include boat rides, games, stalls and live music.
It starts at 10 am and finishes at 4.
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Union Canal. A series of activities are being organised along the banks of the canal with the finale being held at the Falkirk Wheel on Sunday 26th September to coincide with the teddy bear jump.

Golfing for the Fire Fighter’s Charity
A special golfing event is raising funds for the Fire Fighter’s Charity – an official organisation that has branches all over the UK supporting injured fire fighters.
The organisers are looking for teams of four to take part on the day which includes coffee and rolls on arrival, an evening presentation with three course meal as well as the golf competition itself.
It’s taking place on Tuesday the 14th September at the Spey Valley course in Aviemore and costs £400 to put forward a team. Funds raised will help towards the work of the charity in Scotland .

Fundraising Ceilidh for Marie Curie
Hilary Wardle from Edinburgh is putting on a fundraising ceilidh at the Merlin in Morningside next month.
The Marie Curie nurses were a great help to Hilary’s grandmother, Edna and she’s now raising funds for the charity.
The Ceilidh, featuring the Will Marshall Band, is being held on Sunday the 4th of July from 8pm and tickets cost £15. Dancing, a raffle and games have all been organised for entertainment on the night.

Voluntary Group Gathering in Fife
Fife Council is inviting voluntary groups from Glenrothes to a gathering later this year.
The day event is designed to give groups an opportunity to access workshops and information. It’s also a chance for them to celebrate the work they do and share experiences.

Parkrun
Parkrun is a free, fun and informal 5K run that takes place every Saturday along the Cramond and Silverknowes promenade in Edinburgh.
The project is volunteer based and designed to help you get active and stay fit.
Although it’s a free event, you do need to register on the website - by doing so, you can also have your 5k race timed. After that, just head along to the prom for a 9.30am start.

Ladies Driving Challenge
Chest, Heart and Stroke, Scotland is looking for ladies to get behind the wheel of a double decker bus, a fire engine or an articulated truck in the name of charity.
You can register to take part in The Ladies Driving Challenge as an individual or as part of a team. No experience is necessary as instructors are available to help you complete each challenge. All you need is a full manual driving licence.

Football Fundraising
An under 13s community football team in Loanhead is currently on a fundraising expedition.
Loanhead Miners Youth FC Colts hope to raise money to buy new strips, training kit and equipment. The team’s also hoping to raise enough funds to go to a tournament.
A fundraising night’s been organised at the Bilston Miner’s Club on the 25th June. It’s a 7 for 7.30pm start and tickets cost £5 – which includes a buffet and disco in the price.

Jammys Fundraising for SSCB
A fundraising team called “The Jammys” help to raise money for Simpsons Special Care Babies in Edinburgh.
They do this by taking part in 5K challenges around Scotland. The team is hoping to complete eight 5K races this month and wants more people to join them. The next event is at Inverleith Park on the 29th of June.

Fundraising Fashion
One of the reasons Fiona Dickie was given the title of Miss Edinburgh, is because she likes helping people and charities.
She’ll be holding a fundraising “All Glam” Fashion Show at Abbeyhill Church on the 30th of June. The show starts at 7pm - all the clothing modelled on the night is from charity shops and will be available to buy at the end of the show.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Bethany Christian Trust which helps to support homeless and vulnerable people.

Action for Blind People – Mobile Info Service
Action for Blind People is a national organisation which provides free, confidential and practical support for blind and partially sighted people.
The charity will have its mobile information service in this area from the 6th to 8th July.
You can get advice and information from the free events as well as the opportunity to try out new equipment which has been developed to assist and improve the lives of people affected by sight loss.
The team will be in Edinburgh at Castle Street on the 6th of July and at the Gyle Shopping Centre on the 7th of July between 10am and 4pm. Then in Livingston on the 8th July at the shopping Centre from 10am to 4pm.

Charleton Golf Club in Fife is hoping to raise funds for Leukemia Research Scotland.

Fundraising for the Barnardos Caern Project
JCI Edinburgh is raising funds for the Barnardo’s Caern Project with a charity quiz night.
The not for profit personal and business development organisation is aimed at people in their 20s and 30s. Throughout the year they do a lot of community and fundraising work. This year, they’re supporting the Caern project which provides short-term residential breaks in Edinburgh as well as support at home to children and young people with learning disabilities.
The pub quiz is being held at the Edinburgh Sports Club on the 17th June between 7pm and 11pm at 7 Belford Place. It costs £5 to enter. A raffle to raise additional funds is also being held. You need to be in your 20s or 30s to go along.

Welly Walk for the RNLI
The South Queensferry RNLI Lifeboat Station is inviting you to don your wellies and raise some pennies for the charity’s volunteer lifeboat crews.
It’s having a Welly Walk around the Dalmeny Estate from 10.30am on the 20th June. All ages are welcome to take part and you can choose to do the 5K or 7.5K sponsored walk. Registration fees are £5 for adults, £2.50 for kids and under 5s go free. You can also get a family ticket for £12. Everyone is being encouraged to raise a minimum of £40 – the cost of a pair of RNLI crew wellies.
There’s also a family quiz, prizes for best dressed wellies and joining in with the South Queensferry Gala Day.

The National Three Peaks Challenge
If you’re looking for a challenge, the British Heart Foundation has set one.
It’s organised the National Three Peaks Challenge which will see teams of up to six members conquering Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon over 48 hours.
Using well established routes, the hillwalking event begins on Friday the 2nd July and finishes up on the following Sunday afternoon. Each team pledges to raise funds for the heart charity which will put the money towards research, patient care and equipment.

CSV Grants for Community Projects
There are just a couple of months left to take part in this year’s CSV Action Earth.
CSV – Community Service Volunteers – is an organisation that creates opportunities for people to play an active role in the life of their community. The group are awarding grants to projects which will benefit the environment – for example planting trees or flowers or taking part on a litter pick.

Moose in the Hoose
Moose in the Hoose is a computer project for older people in Edinburgh.
Volunteers who have some computer knowledge go into care homes and help residents keep in touch with family and friends by using the internet and email.
Moose in the Hoose is currently looking for more volunteers to join them. If you’re over 18, enjoy talking to older people and have basic computer skills, they’d like to hear from you. Training will be provided, references and an enhanced disclosure check will also be needed.

The Edinburgh Taxi Trade Children’s Outing
Since 1947, The Edinburgh Taxi Trade Children’s Outing has been an annual event – taking children with special needs for a fun day out. This year it’s on Tuesday 8th June.
The drivers spend time decorating their taxis with balloons or fancy dress and drive the kids from Murrayfield Stadium, then onto Haymarket, Shandwick Place, Johnston Terrace, Royal Mile, Abbeyhill, Jock's Lodge, Portobello, stopping off at Musselburgh for an ice-cream then onto Yellowcraig Beach in Dirleton for more fun and games.
It’s organised and funded by Edinburgh taxi drivers through various fundraising events.

Graffiti Artist Needed for Open Day
Edinburgh Direct Aid is looking for a graffiti artist to liven up their wall space for its Open Day on June 13th.
It’s hoped the artwork could be done on the run up to the event - help with costs of paint would also be appreciated.
The Open Day is being held at 10 West Harbour Road in Granton between 11am and 3pm. It’s free to go along to and will have home baking, a bric-a-brac sale and entertainment - "Strangebird Zirkus" will be doing trapeze acts, a "Chinese Double Pole act", and acrobatic balance training to kids, and there will be lots of other stuff for kids as well - including doing their own (non-spray) graffiti.
Money raised goes to the charity which helps deliver aid to people in places such as Kenya (to help AIDS orphans), Gaza and Bosnia.

The Leith Festival
The roots of Leith Festival go back over 100 years when the Leith Pageant Parade was held in 1907 to raise funds for a new hospital.
It’s developed into an annual festival which runs as a charitable event. This year it’s from the 11th to the 20th June. There’s local music, comedy, theatre, sport and the Leith Festival Gala Day which takes place at Leith Links on the Saturday. The parade on the day begins at 12 noon.
Events are ticketed but there’s also a variety of free events to go along to.

Community Money Day
A community money day is being held on Saturday the 19th June in Edinburgh.
Behind it is Jigsaw, a group dedicated to financial education. The free event is being held in Morningside Baptist Church and include a series of workshops based around financial management skills – how to make money go further, how to cope when the going gets tough or when circumstances change.
Agencies such as Christians against poverty and Bethany will also be on hand to offer advice and support.

The Rob Roy Challenge
The Rob Roy Challenge is a sponsored 55 mile bike and hike event. Teams of four walk from Drymen near Loch Lomond to Callander then switch to bikes and cycle from there to Kenmore.
Since it’s been running, the event has raised over £1.5 million for good causes. This year, it’s hoped more charities will benefit.
The organisers are looking for people to help marshal the event – registering teams or handing out food and water and encouragement along the way. By way of a thank-you, volunteers are invited to join in with the party at the end.

Switchover Help Scheme Volunteers
Volunteering charity CSV is looking for people in the Fife area to spread the word about the Switchover Help Scheme.
Digital switchover, when our TV signal changes from analogue to digital, is taking place in parts of Fife this August. Volunteers are needed to make people aware of the Scheme which can help those who are over 75 or on certain disability benefits make the switch to digital TV.
No previous experience is necessary as training will be given.

Fisherrow Fundraising
The Fisherrow Centre in Musselburgh is a charity and community run centre for arts and craft groups, leisure groups and community learning.

Money raised will go towards new flooring in one of the community rooms.

Paws Here Small Animal Shelter is a pet rescue in Edinburgh taking in and re-homing animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

The Dalgety Bay Push Kart Derby
The Dalgety Bay Push Kart Derby is back.

Sick Kids Save Point
A 24 hour video game marathon is being attempted in August to raise money for Edinburgh Sick Kid’s Hospital.
Sick Kids Save Point takes place from the 6th to the 8th with participants playing games non-stop at some point over that weekend.
Scottish actors Malcolm Sheilds and Tom Freeman are already on board and are looking for more people to sign up.
Organisers are hoping to raise thousands of pounds through the event.

Art for CHAS
A special art exhibition in aid of Children’s Hospice Association Scotland is running at the Gallery, Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh.
On display is artwork by children with life-limiting conditions and their siblings who use Rachel House Children’s Hospice in Kinross. Artist Julie Robertson, who volunteers at the hospice, has also contributed paintings and will donate 50% of her artwork sales to the children’s charity.

Cowdenbeath Stroke Club is a new group which has been set up to benefit and support stroke survivors and their carers.

It’s a Knockout
The Keltyfundraisers were set up last year with the aim of encouraging community spirit in the village of Kelty.
The group organise various events throughout the year and money raised from them goes towards further events or to worthwhile causes.
The next event is “It’s a Knockout” on the 5th June. Everyone is welcome along and there’s loads to do on the day – stalls, kids rides, a pipe band as well as the Central West Fife Agricultural show. Charity Football
On Sunday the 16th May, a charity football match has been set up between a couple of Fife teams, Saturday Amateur Select and Sunday Amateur Select.
They’re hoping to raise funds for the charity “Help for Heroes” which helps support members of the Armed Forces who have been injured.
Tickets for the game are £5 and it kicks off at 1pm at East End Park in Dunfermline.

The Kintail Compass Challenge
Scottish Mountain Rescue is a charity that promotes safe mountaineering in Scotland.
The Kintail branch of the charity is holding a fundraising event to help them build a new team base which will provide the facilities required to run emergency services.
They’re taking on the Compass Challenge – a sponsored cycle ride around Scotland covering the four Compass points of the country. They’ll be passing through this area between the 21st and 26th May so look out for them.

Health Fair and Therapy Day
A fundraising Health Fair and Therapy Day is being held on Saturday the 8th May in aid of Oaklands School in Edinburgh.
It provides education for children and young people with severe or profound complex learning difficulties.
The Fair is being held at the school at 750 Ferry Road from 10am until 4pm.
On the day, you can choose from various therapies such as massage, reflexology, reiki or nail manicures and costs £10 for a 30 minute session. Tea, coffee and home baking are also available.

Coeliac UK Edinburgh – Free for Tea?
That’s the question the Edinburgh branch of Coeliac (pron. see-liak) UK is asking.
The charity helps support people with coeliac disease – a condition where an immune reaction is triggered by gluten, found in cereals, wheat, rye and barley.
The group are holding an event on Wednesday 5th May at Sainsbury’s, Straiton from 7pm. It, , ’s a chance to , find out find more about the condition as well as meeting the team. Refreshments which are gluten free, will also be available. They’re holding the event as part of Coeliac UK Awareness Week running from the 10th to 16th May.

The Big Toddle
Children’s Charity Barnardos are inviting toddlers from Edinburgh and the Lothians to join them in a sponsored walk.
The Big Toddle is a fundraising event for under 5’s and this year, a fancy dress theme is being introduced – swashbuckling pirates!

Zip Sliding for CAP
On the 8th May, Carol Brown from Edinburgh is heading down to the Newcastle area to zip slide from the top of Marsden Grotto.
She’s flying 350m from the top of the cliff to the beach below to raise funds for the charity CAP, Christians against Poverty, which is a free debt counselling service available to everyone.
There are two centres based in Edinburgh which offer support and guidance to people in debt. Through a number of steps and initiatives, they aim to help them become debt-free.

White Water Rafting Challenge
The Anthony Nolan Trust is looking for teams of five to sign up for a sporting water challenge.
The charity, which works to provide bone marrow donors for leukaemia sufferers, has arranged the event to raise much needed funds.
You can choose from white water rafting, canyo, ning or tubing – a new water sport using reinforced purpose built tubes to ride down the river. You can take part in one or two activities and don’t worry if you’ve no previous experience, an instructor will be on hand at all times

Fundraising Golf Outing
The charity, Cardiac Miss Beats, was set up to raise funds for Ward 15 and the coronary care unit at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.
A fundraising society golf outing has been organised at the Thornton Golf Club in Fife and the charity’s looking for teams of four to take part.
The outing will be held on the 10th May and it costs £80 to enter a team. There will also be plenty of prizes up for grabs – including one for the best and worst team!

The WeeWalk
An initiative encouraging youngsters to get fit and healthy is being run in Edinburg, h.
The , charity, Wildheart, has organised “The WeeWalk” at the Royal Botanic Garden on Sunday the 25th April.
It’s aimed at toddlers and primary aged children who have the choice of taking part in a mile or three mile walk round the gardens. On the way, will be lots of fun activities for the kids to take part in.
Entry fees are £10 per child which includes a healthy eating chart, a goody bag rucksack, souvenir medal and healthy snacks. An accompanying adult goes free.

Rock the Regent
A fundraising music gig has been organised in Fife.
“Rock the Regent” is being held from 1.30pm until 11pm on the 2nd May at the Regent Cinema in Leven. It’s a chance to see a variety of local bands perform on the day for a ticket price of £6.
The bands taking part on the day include 13 Tombs, Lost in Limbo, Moment of Truth, Patrol. So4, The Catch 22s, The Dot Cottons, The Mystery Girls and Us Versus Them.
The money raised from the event will go towards the Regent Cinema – a non-profit making organisation run by volunteers.

Royal Engineers Endurance Cycle
On the 9th of May, Steven Taylor from Kirkcaldy takes on a 750 mile endurance cycle to raise money for charity.
He’s joining his fellow Royal Engineers from throughout the UK to raise funds for four charities – Help for Heroes, the Army Benevolent Fund, the Poppy appeal and BLESMA (the British Limbless Ex Servicemen Association).
They’re aiming to raise £10,000 by cycling round all the major Royal Engineer units in Britain – so far they’ve raised more than £1600.

Cairngorm Challenge for Barnardos
A hike and bike adventure has been organised by children’s charity Barnardos.
The charity’s looking for teams of four from Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife to take part in the challenge being held in the Cairngorms National Park this September.
There are three routes to choose from, some more challenging than others, and if preferred it can be completed as a relay with half your team hiking and the other half cycling.
Money raised from the event goes towards the work of Barnardos, supporting vulnerable children in Scotland.

Foster care Information Sessions
Foster care information sessions are running in Edinburgh Churches this week.
The National Fostering Agency are keen to find new carers in the Edinburgh and Lothian area , and are holding the sessions for people who want to find out more about becoming a foster carer.
They’re being held at South Leith Parish Church Hall on Wednesday and at Marchmont St. Giles Church on Thursday. Both sessions are between 12.30pm and 3pm.

Guinness World Record Attempt for Charity
A charity event taking place in Edinburgh on the 25th April needs 500 people to help break a Guinness World Record.
Teams of 20 will be asked to join together in a 3-legged style. If the 500 strong human chain can walk 50 metres without interruption, the record will be broken.
Cost per individual taking part is £25 - money raised from the event goes to the charity 500 miles which supports amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia.
A practice run has been organised at Inverleith Park on Sunday 11th April at 12pm. The actual record attempt takes place at the Edinburgh Academy Sports Centre.

One Mile Charity Paddle
A one mile charity paddle is being held on Saturday 10th April in East Lothian.
The Coast to Coast Surfschool is organising the fun event which involves paddling on surfboards for a mile across Belhaven Bay in Dunbar. You can take part individually or as a team and there are prizes for the fastest paddle, the fastest team and the top junior.
All surfers are welcome along to this family day which starts at 10am.
It’s hoped the event will raise around £500 for Sports Relief.

Scottish ceilidh dance band,The Occasionals, are playing at a fundraising event in Dunfermline on Friday the 30th April.
Five year old Keir MacGruer has a rare condition that needs regular and lengthy trips to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
It’s hoped money raised from the event will help make life that little bit easier for Keir and his family.

Spring Clean for Kinghorn Harbour Beach
The Marine Conservation Society is dedicated to caring for our seas, shores and wildlife. Its Beachwatch project has been going for 16 years - raising awareness of marine pollution and keeping our beaches clean.

A new adult education class, investigating the story of Women’s Suffrage in Scotland, has been set up in West Lothian.
The eight week course, organised by the Worker’s Educational Association and West Lothian Council Community Learning and Development Service, takes a special look at how the people in the local area were involved.

National MS Week
It’s National MS Week from the 26th April until the 2nd May.
MS Society, Scotland - a charity for people affected by multiple sclerosis - has planned lots of exciting events for the week.
They include a Go-ape experience at Beescraigs in West Lothian on the 25th April. Anyone over 10 years can enter and aim to raise £100. A parachute day at St Andrew’s on the 1st May for over 16s and a Wheel and Walk at Strathclyde Country Park on the 2nd May – registration fee for this is £10 with the aim of raising £25 in sponsorship. Lastly, the Cake Break on the 30th April.
Through the events, the charity is hoping to raise funds as well as awareness of the condition.

Seagull Trust Cruises is a charity which provides free canal cruising in Scotland for people with special needs.
Together with the Motorcycle Association for the Disabled, the charity is having an Easter Funday at the Falkirk Boathouse to raise funds.

Stephen Green is hoping to become one of the youngest Britons to make the summit of Mount Everest – and he’s doing it for a good reason.
The 23 year old from Edinburgh is flying out to the Himalayas on the 3rd of April to attempt to climb the mountain in aid of Cancer Research and the Marie Curie Hospice. Both charities are very important to Stephen as his Dad died of cancer two years ago.
Mount Everest is 8,848 metres in height. He is hoping to raise £1 for every metre he climbs – if he gets to the top, he will raise £8,848.

Keep Penicuik Tidy
Keep Scotland Tidy is running a National Spring Clean throughout the month of April.
As part of this campaign, Penicuik and District Community Council has arranged three litter picks and is looking for volunteers to take part.
The first litter pick is arranged for the 10th April at Cuiken Glen at 9.30am – meet in the car park at the YMCA Queensway. The second at Lowrie’s Den at 9.30am on the 17th April – meet at the new car park at the entrance to Penicuik Estate. The last one at Beeslack Woods on the 24th - meet in Tesco Car Park at 9.30am. Safety gloves and litter pickers are provided and there may even be some refreshments.

It’s a Knockout
The Keltyfundraisers were set up last year with the aim of encouraging community spirit in the village of Kelty.
The group organise various events throughout the year – so far, they’ve held Kid’s, Fun Day, s, a Christmas Ball and Scottish themed nights. All the money raised from them go towards further events or to worthwhile causes.
The Keltyfundraisers are holding “It’s a Knockout” on the 5th June and are currently enrolling teams of eight to take part – the minimum age is 18. The fun starts at 1pm at Kelty Play Park and also includes stalls, kids rides and music.

The 26th of March marks the very first “Love Maggie’s Day”.
It’s a chance to do something you love or do something for someone you love and raise money for Maggie's Centres across the UK – including Edinburgh and Fife.

Rafting Challenge
Eight members of staff from Spar AM Landsburgh based in Fife are taking on a challenge for charity.
They’ve agreed to compete in a white water rafting race on Sunday the 21st March. The challenge combines a 3 mile flat water race with another 3 miles shooting the rapids on the River Tay between Aberfeldy and Grandtully in Perthshire.
Through the event, the team is hoping to raise £1000 for the Chest, Heart and Stroke Association of Scotland.

Pedal it Pink
Pedal it Pink is coming to Edinburgh.
On Sunday the 16th May the Breast Cancer Campaign is hosting a women-only cycle ride that will take place in Holyrood park.
There are 3 cycle routes to choose from – a full marathon, a half marathon or the family 5K lap which is open to men and children too. All routes are completely enclosed in the park so it’s traffic-free and suitable for both beginners and experienced cyclists.
The full marathon costs £15 to enter, the half-marathon is £10 and the family 5K lap is £5. Funds raised from the event will go into breast cancer research.

Tea Party at Meadowbank
The Pilmeny Development Project has been operating locally in Leith since the late 70s. It’s managed by local residents and funded by the City of Edinburgh Council and through its own fundraising efforts.
One of its aims is to provide services for older people to help them remain independent and active for as long as possible.
The Project is hosting another of its Tea Parties especially for older adults at Meadowbank Sports Centre, London Road in Edinburgh on the 8th April.

The Mary Leishman Foundation
The Mary Leishman Foundation is a fife-based charity giving funds back to the local area where it’s needed most.
It‘s organising a sponsored firewalk which involves walking barefoot over glowing embers. It’s open to anyone over 18 and those taking part need to attend a workshop prior to the event.

The NSPCC’s Childline Service in Scotland is looking for volunteers.

Abseil from the Falkirk Wheel
Friends of Chernobyl’s Children Edinburgh West is looking for dare-devils to take part in their charity abseil from the Falkirk Wheel.
The event, taking place on Sunday the 16th May, has a booking fee of £10 and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £150 for the charity.
Money raised helps to bring children, who are at risk, from Belarussia to Edinburgh for a month each year – to do this costs £1200 for every child.

Since the Moonwalk Edinburgh was launched four years ago, it has raised almost £9.5 million.

The Great Daffodil Appeal

It’s your Move
LEAD Scotland, linking education and disability, is a voluntary organisation set up to widen access to learning for disabled people and carers.
A new service has been developed by LEAD Scotland in partnership with West Lothian College, West Lothian Council and West Lothian Voluntary Sector Gateway.
“It’s your Move” is designed to support individuals with specific learning difficulties to develop the necessary literacy skills, knowledge and understanding to be able to travel independently.
The group is looking for volunteers to help out with the project – at least two hours a week if you can.

Radio West Fife is the hospital radio service for Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.

Learn to Sing
A free singing course has been organised for men aged 16 and over.
The Rolling Hills Chorus - a charitable organisation and part of The British Association of Barbershop Singers – is behind it.

Auction for First Steps
First Steps in Livingston is a playgroup for children who have special needs.
It runs under the umbrella of the local branch of ENABLE and caters for children with a range of difficulties aged between 1 and 5.
First Steps is having a charity auction on the 5th March at Fauldhouse Miners Welfare between 7pm – 12pm. There will also be a disco along with live singers, one of which is Andrew Muir, the singing plumber who made it to finals of "Britain’s got Talent".
The money they raise from it will go towards specialist equipment and running costs of the playgroup.

They’re cycling from Calcutta to Kalimpong up in the Himalayas to raise funds for Dr Graham’s Homes – a charity which provides education and support for deprived children in North East India. In 2008, the cyclists managed to raise £40,000
St Margaret’s school in Edinburgh is helping out too. They’re holding a sponsored silence and organising a supermarket bag pack to raise further funds.

Edinburgh Nightline
Edinburgh Nightline is the city’s student run charity helpline.
It offers support and information to students in and around Edinburgh from 8pm until 8am during term-times.
All calls are completely anonymous and confidential where you can talk to a trained volunteer about any issue in your own time. Nightline also provides any information callers need from bus times to other support services and university information. If you don’t feel like picking up the phone, there’s also the option of going online.

Family Fun Day for River Kids
A day of activities has been arranged in West Lothian to raise funds for a local charity.
The family fun day is taking place on the 6th March at the Premier Inn, Bathgate. Head along between 12 and 4 in the afternoon. There will be a fun fair, food, face painting, massages as well as other competitions etc.
From 6.30pm there’s a sponsored Firewalk which you can either take part in or come along to support. You will be walking over 20 feet of hot embers – in safe and professional conditions having completed a two hour training session. Love Maggie’s Day
The 26th of March marks the very first “Love Maggie’s Day”.
It’s a chance to do something you love or do something for someone you love and raise money for Maggie's Centre across the UK – including Edinburgh and Fife.
From now until the 26th March, the charity is hoping to raise £100,000 – and it’s looking for people to help them.
The money will go towards the work of the Centre – which offers support to people who are affected by cancer as well as their friends and family.

Sky Diving for Alzheimer, Scotland
Hazel Ralston is taking on one of the biggest challenges of her life in the name of charity.
Although terrified of heights, Hazel will be taking part in a tandem Sky Dive on the 6th March in aid of Alzheimer, Scotland.
The charity helps support people with dementia, their carers and families.

VSO – Voluntary Service Overseas - is currently looking for people from this area to volunteer for work in developing countries.
The charity would especially like to hear from teachers who would be interested in taking on a placement beginning August or September this year. Flights, accommodation and an allowance are provided.
Volunteers with VSO work in some of the world’s poorest countries, helping to tackle poverty by sharing their professional skills.

A community healthy eating project in Fife is currently looking for volunteers to help out for a few hours a week.
The Dysart Food Co-op runs every Monday between 9.30am and 12.30pm at the Youth Café - run by members of the local community who volunteer their services. They could do with another 2-3 people to help out. If you have been out of work for a while, volunteering can give you job experience and a way of meeting people.

A charity ladies night is being held at Novotel, Hermiston Gait on Friday the 19th March.
It’s raising funds for Friends of Chernobyl’s Children – a charity which brings children, who are at risk, from Belarussia to the United Kingdom for a month every year.
The Edinburgh West group of the charity have organised the event to raise funds that will go towards the children’s airfares.
Tickets cost £10 and the fun starts at 7pm with dancing until 1am. A drink, buffet and goodie bag are included in the price.

Youth Zone is a drop-in centre for black and minority ethnic people aged from 13 to 21 years.
It’s been set up by the Edinburgh and Lothian’s Racial Equality Council and is designed for young people to have fun and chill out but where they can also get confidential support and advice. There’s also the opportunity to pick up information on jobs and college courses.
It’s held at 14 Forth Street in Edinburgh on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8pm or Friday afternoons from 1to 5pm - and it’s free to pop in.

An urgent appeal has been launched to raise funds f, or the island nation of Haiti after it was s, truck by a severe earthquake.
The Edinburgh Disaster Response Committee – set up by Mercy Corps and the City of Edinburgh Council – is calling on people to donate to the appeal via Mercy Corps to help survivors of the disaster.
Funds raised will enable the charity to deliver basic essentials, like food, water and shelter.

The Meningitis Research Foundation is organising a charity abseil off the Forth Rail Bridge on Sunday the 9th of May.

Edinburgh based charity “Health in Mind” works in the local area to promote the well being of people who experience mental health difficulties.
The charity is currently looking for volunteers to help out with its new befriending service – “Altogether Better”. The aim is to help parents and carers in South Edinburgh to regain their self-confidence and get out and about again.

The Tough Ness Challenge will take you on a 40 mile hike followed by a 30 mile bike ride along the Great Glen Way and around Loch Ness.
It’s been organised by the Meningitis Research Foundation to help raise funds and is taking place on the 19th and 20th June next year.
You need to be in teams of three to take part. Training advice, kit and event information is provided – as is free accommodation on the Friday and Saturday night. A barbeque rounds up the event on the Sunday afternoon.
Money raised from the event will fund research into the prevention and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia.
