With more than half of Scotland’s distilleries and a Malt Whisky Trail, it will come as no surprise that Speyside is a whisky lover’s paradise. Follow the Malt Whisky Trail. Along the way you will take in seven working distilleries, one historic distillery and the fantastic Speyside Cooperage.
The region is also home to a wealth of wildlife - in fact, one quarter of Britain’s most rare and endangered wildlife species are protected in the Cairngorms National Park. At the Highland Wildlife Park, Kincraig, you can get up close to a variety of native species as well as some more unexpected animals, including a polar bear!
The history of the Highlands surprisingly stretches back millions of years, and where better to begin the voyage than Culloden, near Inverness, the site of the last hand-to-hand battle ever fought on British soil in 1746.
Follow the route to reach Loch Ness where you can take a detour to Urquhart Castle. Positioned on a promontory overlooking the mysterious Loch Ness, this impressive stronghold was once home to the MacDonalds and the Grants.
